I vitboken behandlas hur EU kommer att utvecklas under de närmaste tio åren – från den nya teknikens inverkan på samhället och sysselsättningen, till tvivel om globalisering, säkerhetsfrågor och växande populism. Den innehåller också en detaljerad redogörelse för det val som vi står inför i dag. Vi kan antingen ryckas med i dessa tendenser, eller ta dem till oss och utnyttja de nya möjligheter som de för med sig. Europas befolkning och ekonomiska betydelse minskar allt eftersom andra delar av världen växer. År 2060 kommer inte något av våra medlemsländer att utgöra ens 1 % av världens befolkning, vilket är ett starkt skäl till att hålla ihop för att nå bättre resultat. EU:s välstånd, som är en positiv kraft i världen, kommer även i fortsättningen att vara beroende av öppenhet och starka förbindelser med partnerländer.
I vitboken anges fem scenarier, som vart och ett ger en inblick i hur unionen kan se ut år 2025 beroende på vilka val som EU gör.
On March 25th, 2017, 27 leaders of the European Union’s Member States will gather in Rome to celebrate the 60th birthday of the Treaties of Rome, cradle of the EU.
On the 1st of March 2017 at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels, President Juncker presented a White Paper on the Future of Europe, which constitutes the Commission’s contribution to the Rome Summit of 25 March 2017.
The White Paper addresses how the EU will develop over the next ten years – from the impact of new technologies on society and employment, to doubts about globalization, security and growing populism. It also includes a detailed explanation of the choice that we face today. We can either be carried away by these trends, or bring them to us and take advantage of the new opportunities that they bring. Europe’s population and economic importance decreases as the other parts of the world are growing. By 2060, no single Member State will have more than 1% of the world population, which is a strong reason to stay together to achieve better results. EU’s wealth, which is a positive force in the world, will continue to depend on openness and strong relations with partner countries.
The White Paper sets out five scenarios, each of which provides an insight into how the Union could be in 2025 depending on the choices that the EU does. The European Parliament elections in June 2019 will be an important landmark in this process.
