Intercult tar 26 europeiska konstnärer på expedition till Turkiska kustorter

SEAS Xpedition Turkiet, 14-22 september

Intercult tar en busslast med 26 europeiska konstnärer på expedition till Turkiska kustorter, för att  möta lokalbor och communities i fyra byar och städer. Verktygen är teater, performance, installationer, workshops och konstnärlig research på urbana platser. Det fleråriga gränsöverskidande projektet SEAS provar en flexibel form för att skapa möten mellan konstnärer och lokalbor, och mellan två kustregioner. I två år har Intercultinitiativet SEAS turnerat med 15 scenkonst och konstverk producerade inom ramen för SEAS.  Resan har gått till 12 kustorter i Svartahavs- och Nordsjöregionen, inklusive Göteborg (SEAS Göteborg 2009), Helsingborg, Tromsö, Istanbul och Odessa.

“Fokus för SEAS X 2010 är att förfina våra erfarenehter från de tre första åren av projektet. Vi blir mer mobila och med en mindre grupp konstnärer och tekniker än tidigare reser vi till – för oss – outforskad kulturell mark.

SEAS Xpedition handlar om ömsesidigt lärande. Vi tar med oss både färdiga verk och konstnärliga workshops och processer, för att skapa många möten i städer och byar som står inför utmaningen att skapa en hållbar framtid både kulturellt och inom turismen.”

Bland konstnärerna deltar koreografen Kajsa Sandström från Sverige på “date” med performance konstnären Chris Biddlecombe från England, performance kollektivet BADco. från Kroatien kommer att samla intryck och material till en ny föreställning, en av Turkiets mest namnkunniga regissörer Mahir Gunsiray deltar med SEAS-produktionen “Waiting…”.

SEAS Xpedition startar i Istanbul och reser längs med Svartahavskusten till Akçakoça, Ünye, Camlihemsin och Hopa. Resan avslutas med en 4 dagars internationel konstfestival i Batumi, Georgien – SEAS X Batumi 22-25 september.

Akçakoça Closest to Istanbul, this village seems to take on life in a slower tempo which makes the highly  modern mosque in the village center an unexpected  glimpse into the future.

Ünye The largest town during the trip, this thriving coastal town is working to integrate the sea and beach into their future of cultural tourism.

Camlihemsin A small village in the hills that maintains its roots of the Hemsin-people and has a greatly expanded summer population of Turks with country homes in the hills.

Hopa This border town is the regular stop of many trucks moving between Turkey and Georgia, the Caucasus and further to Iran.

Performance and installation

Waiting… – performance

Several migrants to Europe are “waiting” to be greeted, accepted or simply acknowledged so that they can “belong”.  Turkish, Kurdish and English dialogue, physical theatre, music and song.  Performed on the beach, in an open square or a post-industrial space.

The Kiss and Waste Project  – video installation

A series of video essays portraying women across the Black and North Seas. A unique perspective on love, migration and family based on letters written to her as though she was their mother, sister or girlfriend.

Without Borders  – photo installation

The views of young photographers from four countries, as they see one sea that unites and divides them. 6 photos by Serge Poliakov (Odessa), Oleksiy Kachmar (Kherson), Levan Kakabadze (Batumi), Elena Morando (Istanbul-Kiev).

‘Soul and Slot Machines’ with video plasma eyes,  inspired by the artists’ visit to an over-commercialized and somewhat lost seaside resort in England.

Public actions and workshops

Watersports – a public action
Vilna Scena, theatre company, Ukraine, directed by Dmytro Bogomazov
Using only their bodies, voices, a few simple tools and their seaside environment, four actors explore communication through a variety of signs. Ever-changing constellations with an infinite number of meanings.

Fantasy World – workshop with children and installation
Cristina David visual artist, Romania
Together with children Cristina will make films and photos portraying the children in imaginary scenes, showing the magic of the computer and digital camera.

Little Suitcases – workshop with children and installation
Nedyalko Delchev theatre director and animator, Bulgaria
Together with school children in Turkey and Georgia, Nedyalko will make little boxes with objects from the attics of the children’s homes. Crumbs of personal or family stories. Small hopes for better understanding and accepting one another.

Art in progress

During the Xpedition Tomislav Medak, Ivana Ivković, Ana Kreitmeyer and Zrinka Užbinec will create encounters that may lead to material for a future production.

Artist DATE

Chris Biddlecombe (performance artist, UK) and Kajsa Sandström (choreographer/dancer, Sweden) met first in Aberdeen this year. They will continue their encounter in the places we visit, developing ideas for artistic work, according to the SEAS methodology. A collaboration with Umeå: Cultural Capital of Europe 2014 and Creative Scotland.

Photo and documentation

John Byford (photographer, UK) turns his lens towards people and their experiences. He joined SEAS in Skegness, England. A collaboration with Arts Council England/East Midlands.

Interventions and explorations

These adventurous artists joins the Xpedition to make new encounters, to be inspired by the places and each other. They may or may not intervene based on decisions made from place to place. In collaboration with Arts Council England/East Midlands.

Bakgrund

Black/North SEAS är en mångårig undersökning av hur konstnärliga initiativ kan belysa och skapa postindustriell stadsutveckling i framkant, genom att placera samtida konst och scenkonst i offentliga miljöer på kustorter.

SEAS är en process av möten och samskapande mellan konstnärer från Europas utkanter. Konstnärer paras ihop på “blind dates” i en ort eller stad på kusten. Efter en “date” presenterar konstnärerna en idé till ett nytt verk inspirerat av deras tid tillsammans och platsen som de besökt. Projektet har genererat 18 nya konst- och scenkonstverk och en omfattande turné runt Svarta havet och Norsjön 2008-2009. 2010 reser SEAS till Skotland, Turkiet, Georgien och avslutningsvis till Stockholm i november.
